Turkish courts have handed down 1,258 life sentences in 163 investigation cases against the 2016’s failed coup attempt so far, according to state-run Anadolu news agency.
A total of 286 cases were opened against coup suspects, Anadolu said adding that 1,258 suspects were sentenced to life imprisonment in 163 of those cases.
Out of 1,258, 579 were aggravate life sentences meaning the convicts “have to spend the rest of their lives in solitary confinement without the possibility of parole.”
Meanwhile, 550 suspects were sentenced to varying lengths of jail terms other than life in prison.
Apart from coup trials, thousands of others have been convicted of being a member of or leading a terror group after they were rounded up over their alleged ties to the Gulen movement.
Turkish government accuses Gulen movement for the July 15, 2016 failed coup while the latter denies involvement.
More than 150,000 people have passed through police custody and 77,000 have been remanded in pre-trial detention.
