Dozens of people have reportedly attacked the booths of Turkey’s opposition İYİ Party in İstanbul’s Avcılar district, injuring 5 people including the party’s Avcılar representative Gökhan Yiğit on Sunday.
Turkish media outlets reported that the attackers first gathered alongside the pro-government Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) stall nearby and then approached to İYİ Party booths when Yiğit showed up. 4 people were injured with knife while the other was subjected to gun attack, according to media.
Four people were stabbed and one was hit by a bullet, members of the party claimed, with one seriously injured person hospitalized after the incident. Witnesses said about 100 people who had gathered near the ultra-nationalist MHP attacked the İYİ Party booth during an election campaign event. One of the injured was in critical condition, received treatment at İstanbul’s Çapa Medical Faculty hospital.
“Those who do not trust the nation are dragging a democratic race into a dangerous conflict between our youngsters,” tweeted the İYİ Party. Top members of the party also made statements via Twitter.
Last week, an unknown group of people have attacked opposition Felicity Party (SP) stand in Ankara marking the first of such attacks in Turkey’s 2018 election period.
SP and İYİ Party earlier allied to challenge President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the joint candidate of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and its ultra-nationalist ally MHP in snap presidential elections on June 24. (SCF with turkeypurge.com)
