16 university students hailing from Somalia, Djibouti, Guinea and Syria were detained over their alleged ties to the Gulen movement in Turkey’s Mersin province.
State-run Anadolu news agency reported Saturday that police raided 10 premises believed to be populated by Gulen movement’s supporters in Mersin.
16 foreign nationals studying at Mersin University were rounded up during the operation while police were seeking another 7 people, Anadolu said. Somalians are the largest group in those detained.
Turkish government accuses Gulenists for the July 15, 2016 failed coup while the group denies involvement.
Nearly 200,000 people are being investigated and some 90,000 have been put in pre-trial detention over Gulen links so far.
