Banners and election campaign materials of the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) have been covered with Turkish flag in Van’s Gurpinar district upon an order by the city’s governor Osman Doğramacı.
Doğramacı also holds the mayor’s office as the Turkish government earlier seized the administration of the municipality over terror charges.
Doğramacı held a fast-breaking ceremony at the city centre on Friday evening. He asked municipal staff to remove HDP flags and other party banners on the walls of the party’s local office just across the venue.
When party officials reacted, Dogramaci ordered that a huge Turkish flag be hung to cover the party materials.
Turkey has stepped up political pressure on Kurdish politicians in recent months as the government has appointed trustees to the management of dozens of municipalities and arrested some 80 co-mayors and several HDP deputies.
