Former head of police unit established to catch major coup suspect jailed

Ercan Özoğluöz, the former head of the special police unit established to apprehend prime coup suspect Adil Öksüz, has been jailed as part of an investigation into the Gulen movement.

Ozogluoz was arrested on charges of membership to the movement, media said Friday.

Turkish government accuses Gulen movement for the July 15, 2016 failed coup and claims that Adil Oksuz, an academic and an alleged Gulen supporter, is the leading perpetrator of the attempted coup. The Gulen group denies involvement in the coup.

In the very aftermath of the botched attempt, a special unit was established to catch Öksüz in Turkey’s Sakarya province where he was last seen, and Ozogluoz led this police unit until he was suspended from the post in Apr, 2017.

Öksüz has been at large since he was briefly detained immediately after the coup.

Turkish government has so far detained 150,000 people and arrested 90,000 over the faintest –true or alleged– links to the Gülen movement.
