Report reveals 319 child workers lost their lives in workplaces in Turkey since 2013

At least 319 child workers lost their lives in workplace accidents since 2013 in Turkey where  over 2 million child workers are actively working, according to a report on child labour released by Ankara Laborers’ Health and Occupational Safety Assembly (İSİGM) on Tuesday on the occasion of the World Day Against Child Labor.

According to a report by Bianet, the report also said that Turkish government authorities doesn’t share the data of child labor openly and abstains from inspections concerning child labor, and drew attention to impunity. The report said Adana, Şanlıurfa and Gaziantep are the Turkish cities where the highest number of children lost their lives in workplace accidents.

Report reminded that these are also the cities where refugees are highly populated and added that 29 of the 319 these children were refugee/immigrant. 24 children lost their lives in Adana; 19 in Şanlıurfa; 18 in Gaziantep; 15 in İstanbul and 14 in Konya according to the report. The rate of girls who lost their lives in workplace accidents is 16 percent.

İSİGM demanded that child labor be prohibited in Turkey.
