A Turkish court ruled to release police officers Yakup Kurtaran and Özkan Mumcu, who have been tried in the case on the murder of Turkish-Armenian journalist Hrant Dink on January 19, 2007, from prison on Tuesday.
The latest hearing of the trial regarding the murder of Agos weekly newspaper’s former editor-in-chief Hrant Dink at the İstanbul 14th High Criminal Court. The court has ruled for release of police officer Yakup Kurtaran, who was from Samsun Police Department of the time and police officer Özkan Mumcu, a former officer from the Intelligence Office of Trabzon Police Department from prison on the ground that both have presented their defence before the court.
The court has ruled for judicial probe for Kurtaran and Mumcu and put an international travel ban. Yakup Kurtaran was one of the police officers who posed together with Ogün Samast, the murderer of Hrant Dink, before a Turkish flag when he was apprehended in Samsun province days after the murder.
Dink was shot dead with three bullets on Jan. 19, 2007 in front Agos’ then-main office, located on the Halaskargazi Street in Şişli. Every year since then thousands of mourners have attended a commemoration ceremony for him, laying carnations at the spot where he was killed.
Despite 11 years having passed, little progress has been made regarding Dink’s case. Ogün Samast, who was aged 17 at the time of the shooting, was jailed for 23 years in 2011 for the killing. But speculation about the involvement of other groups inside and outside the state apparatus has persisted, and a number of slow-moving investigations are still ongoing.
