Turkish police detained eight Kurdish musicians and theater players in Diyarbakır and Van provinces on Saturday over their plays in Kurdish that they have staged.
According to a Twitter post shared by Lezgin Botan, a deputy of pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) on Saturday, Turkish police conducted operations in Diyarbakır and Van provinces against the musicians and theater players who are members of Wan Mencel Theater.
Botan stated that “7 artist were detained only for they have staged plays in Kurdish. The artists identifies as Kemal Yıldırım, Emine Aksoy, Saliha Ayata, Elif Gemicioğlu, İlayda Kutlar, Asmin Açar and Ferhat Aslan were detained during police raids on their houses in Van.”
Pro-Kurdish Fırat news agency (ANF) has also reported that Kurdish artist Şêrko Kanîwar was also detained following a raid on his house in Diyarbakır. The reason for the detention was not disclosed.
