At least 80,000 passports remain revoked despite gov’t amnesty

Turkish government has removed restrictions on  155,350 passports that it revoked in the aftermath of the July 15, 2016 failed coup however there are at least 80,000 people are still banned from leaving the country with their travel documents.

The Turkish Ministry of Internal Affairs announced Wednesday that it removed restrictions from 155,350 passports belonging primarily to spouses of people allegedly affiliated with the Gülen movement or their close relatives.

However, at least 79,069 passports remain revoked despite the amnesty as the government had cancelled 234,419 passports over ties to the movement in December, 2017.

Turkish government accuses Gulenists of masterminding the July 15, 2016 failed coup while the latter denies involvement. More than 150,000 people have passed through police custody and 90,000 were remanded in pre-trial detention since the summer of 2016.
