The number of people who were removed from their jobs in the aftermath of the failed coup in Turkey totals 41,705 in the education sector and 15,584 in the military, according to a recent report.
Egitim-Sen educators’ union said in a report, published on July 19, 2018, the Turkish government’s post-coup crackdown has targeted educators rather than military or police officers.
A total of 15,584 military officers and 32,093 police officers were dismissed, the report said underlying that the number of dismissals in the education sector has reached to 41,705. The purged people in the education sector include 5,904 academics and 1408 university personnel, according to the report.
Turkish government purged 135,144 from public payroll in the aftermath of the failed coup, the same report said.
Turkey survived a failed military coup on July 15, 2016, after which the government declared a 3-month State-of Emergency. The emergency rule was extended continuously for 2 years to be terminated on July 18, 2018. More than 150,000 people have lost their jobs and around the same number of people have passed through police custody. Around 90,000 people were remanded in prison in this period.
