Turkish government led by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has detained 228,137 people under the state of emergency which has been declared in the immediate aftermath of the controversial coup attempt on July 15, 2016 and due to end on July 18, 2018, according to data compiled by Bianet on Tuesday.
The nationwide state of emergency was declared five days after the coup bid and gave extraordinary powers to the Turkish government. 805 life sentences were given out following the coup attempt, said Bianet.
Also, legal action was taken against 17,089 social media users on charges of making propaganda for a terrorist organisation or hate speech during the state of emergency including 845 people who criticised a Turkish military operation into Afrin province in Syria in early 2018.
According to Bianet, 174 media organisations were closed by the government as well as 1,414 NGOs and associations, 145 foundations and 19 trade unions. Trustees were appointed to run 99 municipalities in place of elected officials, whose vast majority are belong to the pro-Kurdish Democratic Regions Party (DBP).
