A group of activists in South African city of Pretoria was reportedly attacked outside the newly-opened Turkish embassy while they were protesting President Recep Tayyip Erdogan ahead of his visit to the mission.
Security personnel emerged from the Turkish embassy and pounced on a crowd of civic society group members belonging to the Turkey Solidarity Network (TSN) who were picketing outside the Turkish Embassy in Pretoria, ANA said.
Pictures taken during the scuffle also showed that protesters were holding stones in their hands.
“We were very peaceful, yet firmly picketing about Erdogan’s dictatorial rule. Suddenly, security personnel emerged from the embassy and attacked us. I was kicked in the face, and I’m bleeding right now as you can see,” TSN’s interim chairperson Majesty Mnyandu told ANA.
The group was reportedly staging a protest in solidarity with the victims of the Turkish government’s post-coup crackdown.
More than 150,000 people have passed through police custody and 90,000 were remanded in prison since a failed coup in 2016 in Turkey.
