At least 39 women were killed in Turkey in June 2018, according to a report released on Wednesday by “The Platform We Will Stop Women Killings (Kadın Cinayetlerini Durduracağız Platformu, or KCDP) which has also underlined that sexual abuse and sexual violence continue to increase across the country.
The monthly report of the platform has detailed the violations of women and children’ rights and criticises the authorities as they are not doing all they are required to by İstanbul Convention to combat violence.
“Unless concrete steps are taken against violence the dimension of violence will include more and more killings. In June, 18 women have been killed by causes not yet established while in 14 murders the killers have not been identified,” said the report.
“The violation of women’s rights by the Turkish authorities is another dimension of violence”, says the report, underlining that 12,000 women in women shelters were prevented from voting during the June 24 elections.
According to report, 4 women were killed in İstanbul, 4 women in Antalya, 3 women in Bursa, 3 women in İzmir and 3 women in Muğla in June. Also, 22 women suffered from sexual violence in the same period.
The report said 11 women were killed by their husbands, 5 of them were killed by one of their relatives, 3 women were killed by their spouse based on religious marriage, 2 women killed by their former husbands, 2 of them were killed by their boyfriends, 1 woman killed by her son and 1 women was killed by her father.
The report also underlined 24 cases of child abuse. According to the report, 10 children were victim of abuse by people they didn’t know, 5 of them by relatives, 4 of them by teachers, 1 of them by boss, and 4 of them by acquaintances.
At least 6,375 women were killed across Turkey in last 15 years under the rule of Justice of Development Party (AKP) led by Turkish autocratic President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
According to information given by Şenal Sarıhan, a deputy of Turkey’s main opposition Republican People Party (CHP) and then deputy chairperson of the Parliamentary Commission on Human Rights Investigation on November 25, 2017, the annual number of women who were killed was 66 in 2002 when the AKP came to power in Turkey, however this number in the country has been 338 in the first 10 months of 2017.
