Turkish court bans book on history of Kurdistan

A book titled Kürdistan Tarihi (The History of Kurdistan) from the Avesta publishing house has been banned by a Turkish court, the Gazete Duvar news website reported on Thursday.

The book, a compilation of articles in Russian translated into Turkish by the Kurdish Research Center, was first banned in 2000, when it was published in Turkish. The publisher was fined and sentenced to prison.

After an objection filed the same year, the book was re-released and the convictions quashed.

The Avesta publishing house was subjected to book censors in May of this year, when nine books were banned by Turkish courts on allegations of connections to terrorist groups.

Abdullah Keskin, owner of the publishing house, said they learned of the ban during a police investigation into other books on Wednesday, even though the decision was made on July 1st. He added that they had no notice of an investigation or court order regarding the ban.

Avesta primarily publishes books on Kurds, serving Turkey for more than 20 years.
