A Turkish court in Ankara province has ruled for the release of 11 pro-Kurdish politicians, including Prof. Dr. Onur Hamzaoğlu, co-spokesperson of the Peoples’ Democratic Congress (HDK) and Fadime Çelebi, the deputy chair of the Socialist Party of the Oppressed (ESP) from the prison at the end of the first hearing in trial.
Hamzaoğlu has been in prison for five months on “propaganda” and “incitement” charges over a press release on Afrin operation. The defendants have been standing trial at Ankara 10th High Criminal Court on Thursday for criticising Turkey’s operation against Afrin district of Syria which eventually resulted in the occupation of the canton by Turkish military and its ally, radical Islamist rebel groups.
The latest hearing in the case against 12 pro-Kurdish and socialist politicians has been held in Ankara on Thursday. The court decided to release Hamzaoğlu and Çelebi pending trial. Hamzaoğlu was detained on February 9, 2018.
