NEW YORK (Oct. 24, 2018)— The Alliance for Shared Values issued the following statement on Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s speech to the Turkish Parliament on the death of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi:
“The Alliance for Shared Values condemns the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi. We urge for an impartial international investigation so that those who are responsible for his murder are held accountable.
“President Erdogan has made it a priority to investigate Khashoggi’s death, but what has Erdogan done for Turkish journalists? Only imprison them, shut down or co-opt their news outlets, and fail to fully resolve such murders on Turkish soil, such as the assassination of Turkey’s own Hrant Dink, a prominent writer.
“According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, more journalists are held in Turkish jails than anywhere else in the world – 73 of the 262 jailed journalists worldwide languish in Turkish prisons, well ahead of second-place China. Since the failed coup attempt of July 15, 2016, the Erdogan government has shut down 189 outlets and arrested 319 journalists, according to the website TurkeyPurge. There are virtually no independent media outlets left in Turkey, whether by outright closure, takeover or intimidation.
“Whatever the motivation, it is right to investigate the murder of a journalist. But this should be the first step in the Turkish government coming to grips with its own record with regard to the press.”
