Extradited to Turkey despite UN notice, Gülenist teacher died in İstanbul Silivri prison

Mehmet Akbulut, a 48-year-old Turkish national who was extradited from Bosnia to Turkey last year, died in İstanbul’s notorius Sİlivri prison on November 7, the Turkish media reported.

Mr. Akbulut was extradited to Turkey upon his alleged links to Turkey’s Gülen group, which is accused of masterminding a coup attempt on July 15, 2016,

The group denies any involvement.

Akbulut’s cause of death is unknown at this time.

The Turkish government has launched both a domestic and a global crackdown against the Gülen group, accusing it of orchestrating a coup attempt on July 15, 2016.

The group denies any involvement.

Since July 2016, more than 100 Gülen-linked Turkish nationals were brought back to Turkey through intelligence service operations and with the cooperation of other countries, including Kosovo, Qatar, Azerbaijan, Malaysia, Gabon and Myanmar.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu said on Nov. 14 that Turkey has demanded the extradition of a total of 452 people from 83 countries over their alleged links to the Gülen group so far.

Speaking at the budget debate of the parliament on Wednesday, the minister said that a total of 104 Gülenists in 21 countries have been brought to Turkey since July 15, 2016.

Also, tens of schools and language courses that are established by the Gülen group were closed in 21 countries, while some of them were handed over to Maarif Foundation in 16 countries. Some 23 percentage of the foreign ministry staff were dismissed due to Gülen connection, the minister said.

At least 58 individuals, among whom are police officers, prosecutors and teachers, have been found dead in Turkish prisons since the failed coup attempt, causing serious concern about the fate of thousands of civilians who are being kept in jail in poor conditions across the country.

The relatives of most of them claim that the detainees are not the kind of people to commit suicide, shedding doubt on the official narrative. Rumors also have it that some of the detainees were killed after being subjected to torture under custody.
