Journalist Murat Aksoy sent back to prison after court upholds sentence on terror charges

Turkish journalist Murat Aksoy was sent back to prison on Thursday after a regional appeals court upheld a local court’s ruling to imprison him for 2 years and 1 month.

A former columnist for the now now-closed Bugun daily newspaper, Aksoy spent 421 days in pretrial detention over his alleged links to the Gülen movement, which is accused by the Turkish government of being behind a failed coup last year. The movement denies involvement.

Aksoy was released in Oct, 2017 but an Istanbul court later convicted him of “aiding a terrorist organization,” a decision that has been upheld by an appeals court very recently.

On Nov 22, he was re-arrested and sent back to Metris Prison in Ankara.

Turkey is the leading jailer of journalists with more than 200 media personnel behind bars.
