Two girls were killed Saturday, while their mother was seriously injured in a car crash while driving back home from a Kırıkkale prison where their father is being held as a post-coup prisoner.
According to a tweet by Ömer Faruk Gergerlioğlu, a deputy of the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP), Naime Civelek (8) ve Betul Civelek (3) were coming back with their mother, Hatice Civelek (32), from a visit to their father, Enes Civelek who is being held in Keskin prison over alleged links to Turkey’s Gülen movement.
According to several social media users, the arrestee’s mother, Havva Civelek (58), and farther-in-law Emin Balıkçı (55), both of whom were also in the same car, were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. This claim has neither been confirmed nor denied by the Turkish authorities.
Turkey survived a military coup attempt on July 15 that killed over 240 people and wounded more than a thousand others. Immediately after the putsch, the Justice and Development Party (AKP) government along with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan pinned the blame on the Gülen movement.
The movement denies any involvement.
