2018 Nobel Peace Prize winner Nadia Murad, a Yazidi woman who survived the atrocities of the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), asked Turkey’s Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu to stop airstrikes in the Iraqi town of Sinjar.
Murad posted a photo on Twitter showing a meeting with Çavuşoğlu on Sunday.
“Turkey & Iraq must work together to find a solution to prevent any further bombings in Sinjar. We want to rebuild what [ISIL] destroyed & help Yazidis return home,” Murad tweeted.
Turkey has been conducting a military operation targeting the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) camps in northern Iraq accompanied by heavy and frequent airstrikes.
Murad, who resides in Germany, became a symbol of war against ISIL after she escaped from three months in captivity by ISIL terrorists who forced her into sex slavery.
She describes ISIL’s human trafficking, slavery and massacres as a genocide against the Yazidi people of Iraq.
