Location shift reports from Kurdish-majority town ahead of local elections

Some 3187 law enforcement officers reportedly have been relocated to Halfeti district of Turkey’s southeastern Kurdish-majority city Sanliurfa before the upcoming local elections of March 2019.

A report by Mesopotamia News Agency came following reports on a wide-scale location shifting in the other southeastern Kurdish-majority cities of Siirt and Sirnak.

According to a report published by the critical news portal, Evrensel daily, this figure is a little bit more than the vote gap between the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) and pro-Kurdish People’s Democratic Party (HDP) on the latest parliamentary elections of 2018, where HDP has taken 9104 of the votes and AKP 6075.

The district had 22,735 voters in the 2015 parliamentary elections and this figure rose to 24,148. In the following six months after the 2018 elections, voters number rose from 24,148 to 27,335 which led to speculations about location shifting, comparing with the 1413 increase for the latest four-year term.

Some 94 out of 102 municipalities in Kurdish-majority cities and towns are now administered by trustees appointed by government, rather than their elected mayors. Authorities removed those mayors, elected in the latest municipal elections in 2014, in a security crackdown that followed a failed coup attempt in 2016 as reported by Reuters. Halfeti district of Sanliurfa is one of those cities that are administered by trustees.
