Outrage at new law proposal that will see child marriages becoming legal in Turkey

A new law proposal that aims to legalise child marriage has outraged most Turkish citizens who have called the suggestion nothing but a ‘disgrace.’

Most members of the public and non-profit organisations have come out against the law which is now commonly known as ‘marriage amnesty for child abuser.’

It’s been reported that the scandalous ‘law’ is back on the agenda of Parliament after it was taken off years back following a public relations disaster. The law, if passed by Parliament, will open doors for child marriages.

With this proposal, the ‘pardoning child abusers’ will be back on the agenda. If passed and signed, the penalty of perpetrators will be ‘postponed or adjourned’ if victims marry their perpetrators.

10 000 child abusers to be freed

According to a report by the left-winger newspaper, Birgün Daily,  AKP is to reinstate this suggestion under the pretext of ‘experiencing grievances for punishment’. If the law is reinstated, child abusers will be pardoned legally.

With the law passed, 10 000 child abusers are expected to be freed. In the case of the law getting support from other political parties, then it may be passed before the Turkish parliament goes to recess.

No clarity on the marriage by ‘threat’

According to the controversial proposal, child marriages are to be legalised in a case where the marriage is ongoing or the two partners are still together. The proposal indicates that marriages, acted by coercion, threat, violence or rape will be excluded. Meanwhile, there is no clarity on how a law will prevent marriages entered upon using ‘threats.’

Embedded media helping to push a silly idea

To push harder for the proposal to become law, a ‘scandalous campaign’ is being fervently pushed by government and its embedded media organisations. The law was brought to Parliament in November 2016 but was withdrawn due to massive public outrage.

Bekir Bozdağ, the then Justice Minister during the unjust proposal, defended the proposal by saying “married agreed on and there were people who attended with gifts,” but his explanation sparked immense public outrage.

Ticket to child marriages

On the other hand, bringing back of the proposal took heavy reaction among some political parties and NGOs. Canan Güllü, Chairman of the Federation of the Woman Organisation in Turkey, Republican People’s Party (CHP) Deputy Chairman Camze Akkuş İlgezdi and Ezgi Koman Defender of the Child Rights and Coordinator of the Now -Defunct Gündem Child Organisation jointly expressed disgust at how the “law proposal will give way to child marriages.”
