The family and fellow People’s Republican Party (HDP) members of jailed Abdullah Ocalan has come out guns blazing against a lousy 15-minute jail visit they were afforded.
Ocalan has been imprisoned and spending time in isolation after he was arrested and sentenced to an aggravated life sentence following he was brought to Turkey from Kenya in 1999.
He was not allowed to see any family members since September 2016, and his lawyers since 2011.
After a long period, the ban on a visit was slightly lifted last Saturday and Ocalan’s brother Mehmet Ocalan visited him in a remote prisoner island Imrali.
That move came after a series of hunger strike protests among HDP members, particularly initiated by Leyla Guven, an imprisoned deputy of HDP who has been on hunger strike since November 8.
Criticising the short visitation time, Sezai Temelli, the co-chair of the pro-Kurdish party, HDP, said the given time was nothing but pathetic.
Abdullah Ocalan was barred from meeting with any visitors. His two-and-a-half-year period ban was lifted for a fifteen-minute visit, according to his brother, Mehmet.
“I state this clearly, isolation terms have been going on for twenty years now. We should identify what we call isolation. It is not a matter to be overcome over a family visit,” said Temelli in an interview with the Mesopotamia News Agency.
Temelli said it was pivotal that they regularly receive news regarding the Ocalan’s health. Temelli dismissed any progress on the visitation as it’s too short, emphasising that the prison conditions were still horrible.
Abdullah Ocalan is serving a life sentence, transformed from a death sentence after capital punishment was canned from the Turkish Penal Code. He is serving time at the Imrali island prison in Turkey since 1999, on charges of leading the outlawed Kurdish armed group PKK.
