Turkey signals to move forward on the murder of the Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi and is planning to launch an international investigation.
“Some Western countries were trying to cover up Khashoggi investigation, and we had made preparations to launch an international investigation on the case,” said Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu on Monday, Turkish Anadolu reported.
From the very first days of the cruel incident happened on Oct 2 at Saudi Arabian Istanbul Consulate, Turkey has been in odds with Saudi Arabia that the latter has been accused of not fully cooperating to uncover the killing.
“There are Western countries trying to cover this case up. I know the reasons. We know and see what sorts of deals are made. We see how those who spoke of freedom of the press are now covering this up after seeing money,” Anadolu quoted him.
As a sign of being determined to bring the truth to the light, he said further: “We, however, will go until the end. We made preparations for an international investigation in the coming days and we will take the necessary steps.”
Turkey believes that Jamal Khashoggi’s murder was ordered by the highest rank of Saudi regime, however, the kingdom has strictly denied the allegations and opposed that crown prince Muhammed bin Salman was involved.
For now, 5 of 11 suspects detained in Saudi Arabia may face death penalty. In the aftermath of the killing, Riyadh admitted that it was a premeditated murder.
Vanishing a Washington Post columnist and a critical voice at its consulate premises sparked international outrage against Saudi Arabia.
The crown prince Muhammed bin Salman has long been pointed at as the key person in Khashoggi slaughter, but no evidence has been put forth to prove it yet.
Since then Riyadh has been facing heavy international pressure over the case. The Senate of the U.S. has voted for a resolution blaming the crown prince MBS for the murder.
