Ali Aktas, The Felicity Party’s (SP) mayoral candidate for the metropolitan city of Antalya lashed at Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s Twitter post aligning the opposition with terrorist organizations on his Twitter account on Wednesday, offering the opposition parties to pull out of the upcoming local elections.
Erdogan’s tweet that came on Tuesday displayed a table comparing the People’s Alliance, formed by the ruling Justice and Development Party, AKP and the Nationalist Movement Party, MHP with the opposition’s Nation Alliance. The table designated the goal of the Nation Alliance as enabling the offshoots of terrorist organizations to govern the municipalities.
Erdogan previously accused the Republican People’s Party, IYI Party and the SP which form the Nation Alliance of aligning with the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party, HDP. Erdogan and his cronies’ political discourse equates HDP with the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party, PKK, which has waged an armed insurgency in southeastern Turkey for decades. Erdogan went on to say that the Nation Alliance is taking orders from PKK.
IYI Party Chair Meral Aksener denounced Erdogan’s tone, and said that he is criminalizing the 17 million people who voted for opposition parties.
The post from Erdogan’s official Twitter account repeated his allegations in a written statement, claiming that the Nation Alliance is guided by PKK and the Gulen Movement, which Ankara as a terrorist organization and accused of instigating the failed coup of 2016.
“I propose to all opposition parties to pull out of the election race in response to this tone. Turkey is bigger than elections and power ambitions. We do not have children to sacrifice for their power ambitions. This country cannot bear with this divisive tone and horrible manners. Let them play themselves, ” said the mayoral candidate Aktas from his twitter account.
