As the Brexit deadline looms and uncertainty takes its toll on UK’s economy, the Labour Party’s Brexit spokesman, Keir Starmer, said that the party will back a second Brexit referendum if its alternative deal on the transition period is not accepted by parliament.
“If Parliament rejects our plan, then Labour will deliver on the promise we made at our annual conference and support a public vote,” Reuters quoted Starmer as saying.
Starmer’s statement followed Prime Minister Theresa May’s announcement that the date of the vote for changes to the exit deal will take place on 12 March. It was received by Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn as a cynical way to take lawmakers hostage by running down the clock, forcing them to choose between her deal or no deal.
The Labour Party’s move does not necessarily mean that a second vote on Brexit will take place, as the number of MPs who might back a call for a second referendum remains unclear at the moment.
A ‘political and constitutional crisis’ is what Starmer labeled the current situation in Britain, claiming that lawmakers’ opinions might change as the March 29 Brexit date approaches.
Ruling out a no-deal Brexit is on the table
According to a report by Bloomberg on Monday, May will propose to delay the Brexit deadline at a meeting with MPs on Wednesday.
Amid reports of a possible revolt against May, by lawmakers within the Conservative party, she reportedly wants to prevent the prospect of losing control of the process to parliament and wants to discuss extending the due date in a bid to ensure that the UK does not leave the European Union without a deal.
The move will mean a change of stance on May’s part, as she repeatedly argued that delaying the Brexit date wouldn’t help solve the current crisis arising from the ensuing uncertainty.
The EU’s consent is required to implement the extension, thus, a unilateral delay of the Brexit deadline is not within the grasp of the UK.
