Pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party’s (HDP) co-chair, Sezai Temelli, said on Friday that their election banners written in Zaza language are being banned due to the ignorance of authorities who mistook the phrase “Ye mao” with Maoist propaganda. It means “It is ours” in Zaza language, he said.
Temelli addressed the HDP supporters during an election rally in the Aegean city of Izmir and lamented about the ignorance of the authorities to his audience.
“They do not know Zaza language, they do not know Kurdish language and they are not able to comprehend what they read. They believe that ‘Ye mao’ is causing Maoist propaganda,” said Temelli.
He continued using sarcasm, saying, “Make sure that China remains unaware of this. You say this here about the word ‘Mao,’ but go there to ask for loans. China should not hear of this or you won’t be able to get any loans.”
Pointing to a number of issues during his speech, Temelli started by conveying his condolences to the relatives of those who lost their lives in the New Zealand terrorist attack and condemned racism as a crime against humanity.
“However, we face this hatred and enmity every day,” said Temelli. “We face government capitalizing on enmity towards Kurds and Alawites. That is why we will put a stop to this together.”
Temelli claimed that his party would spread its local governance mentality to Turkey, and asserted, “HDP will govern in every region to open up municipalities to the people.”
Some 94 out of 102 municipalities in southeastern Turkey are being governed by trustees instead of their elected mayors due to the government’s accusations against HDP member mayors, accusing them of having ties to the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party, a Kurdish militant group fighting for an autonomous Kurdish state.
