Best livable cities index ranked Istanbul 130th among 231 cities in the world

Istanbul has failed to at least make it on the top 100 list of the most livable cities in the world.

Instead, Turkey’s economic capital has managed a disappointing 130th place among 231 cities around the world. The survey and rankings were conducted by Mercer Ranking. Istanbul is the only Turkish city to make the list.

The factors that were evaluated in the overall city quality include recreational, housing,  school, and education, political and social environment, medical and health considerations, social-cultural environment.

A decline in the crime rate and terrorist incidents over the past 12 months made Istanbul rise by four places this year. Istanbul has been under harsh criticism for its ugly and urban sprawl, uncontrolled urbanization and transit cities for migration in recent years.

One of the countries ranked high with migrants is Syria. There have been several xenophobic attacks in recent times as Turks want Syrians out of Istanbul.

The data, released on Wednesday, lists the best livable cities with most European cities dominating the list in the past ten years. The data shows Vienna is at the top, followed by Zurich, Auckland, Munich, and Vancouver, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Copenhagen, Geneva, and Basel. Vancouver came at the third spot, sharing with Auckland and Munich. Vancouver is the only highest ranking city in North America.

Globally, Singapore ranked 25th as the best city to live in. Uruguay’s capital Montevideo was the highest ranked livable city in South America. Port Louis city in Mauritius topped in Africa.

This year, Mercer provided separate a ranking on personal safety, which assesses cities’ internal stability; crime levels; law enforcement; limitations on personal freedom; relationships with other countries and freedom of the press.

Western Europe dominates the rankings, with Luxembourg named as the safest city in the world, followed by Helsinki, Basel, Bern and Zurich in joint second.

According to Mercer’s 2019 personal safety ranking, Damascus ranked bottom in 231st place and Bangui in the Central African Republic came second lowest in 230th place.
