Vegetable prices in Turkey’s capital city Ankara increased by 40.11 percent in the first three months of this year according to a report by Turkey’s biggest trade union confederation.
Diken news portal reported on Wednesday that the Turkish Confederation of Workers’ Unions (TURK-IS) released food prices in Ankara decreased by 0.73 percent in March, while increasing 21.13 percent on a year-on-year basis.
The report said that vegetable prices increased by 40.11 percent in the first three months of the year.
The average price per kilogram of vegetables continued to increase in March by 6.28 percent compared to the previous month. TURK-IS said the average price per kilogram of vegetables reached TL 7.79 lira in March.
The average price per kilogram of fruit hit 5.19 lira with an increase of 11.85 percent compared to February.
According to the union’s data, the poverty threshold decreased by 48 Lira to 6,560 Lira while the hunger threshold decreased by 14 Lira to 2,014 Lira, compared to the previous month.
The poverty threshold is a total of the basic expenditures of an average four-member household, while the hunger threshold is the monthly spending estimate for a four-member household to get sufficient nutrition.
The cost of living for an unmarried employee without a child is 2,454 lira per month.
In February, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s government introduced municipality markets.
At the municipality markets, also known as state markets, fruit and vegetables have been sold by the municipalities without making a profit.
The markets have been opened in 15 Ankara districts, along with 50 different districts of Istanbul, the pro-government Akşam daily reported on Wednesday. Bekir Pakdemirli, Turkey’s Agriculture and Forestry Minister, announced on Tuesday that five supermarket chains would provide Turkish customers low-priced fruit and vegetables to be supplied by the Agricultural Credit Cooperatives of Turkey.
