Turkey’s unemployment rate hit 11 percent in 2018

Turkey’s unemployment rate reached 11 percent in 2018, up from 10.9 percent one year earlier, according to official data released by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) on Monday.

The institute reported that the number of unemployed persons aged 15 years and over increased by 83,000, to 3,537,000 persons in Turkey compared to the previous year.

The male unemployment rate increased by 0.1 percent to 9.5 percent, while the female unemployment rate declined by 0.2 percent to 13.9 percent.

“While the youth unemployment rate in the 15-24 age group registered at 20.3 percent with 0.5 percentage point decrease, the unemployment rate for 15-64 age group registered at 11.2 percent with 0.1 percentage point increase,” the report stated.

The report further stated that agricultural employment decreased by 167,000 persons and non-agricultural employment increased by 717,000 persons.

Turkey’s labor force managed a minor increase in 2018. “The number of persons in the labor force reached 32,274,000 persons, with 631,000 person increase, and labor force participation rate reached 53.2 percent with 0.4 percentage point increase in 2018,” stated the report.

The institute announced earlier this month that unemployment crept up to 13.5 percent in the November-January period from 12.3 percent a month earlier.

Previously, both Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his son-in-law, Berat Albayrak, who is also the country’s Finance Minister, had promised that the country had now moved past its worst economic troubles.

The government and Union of Chambers & Commodity Exchanges began efforts in February towards increasing employment, promising jobs for 2,5 million people.

Zehra Zumrut Selcuk, Turkish Minister of Labor, Social Service and Family, promised that the Turkish government would pay the salaries, taxes, and premiums of all new employees for the first three months and would then continue to pay the individual’s taxes and premiums for the following nine months.
