A joint declaration has been issued by five major parties in Turkey’s parliament to condemn terror attacks that left 49 people dead in New Zealand on Friday.
The ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party), main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), Good (IYI) Party and the pro-minority rights Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) issued the declaration on Friday, saying that they strongly condemn the terror attacks, which were referred to as the “result of racism based on Islamophobic and xenophobic hate speech.”
“The Western governments and media should wholeheartedly and categorically steer clear of rhetoric that provokes Islamophobic emotions and actions,” stated the declaration, signed by the deputy group chairs of the parties.
The Western world should “avoid encouraging the actions of Islamophobic tendencies,” it warned.
The parties wished God’s mercy upon the victims of the mass shootings and a speedy recovery to the injured.
The declaration ended, stating, “We offer condolences to the Islamic world, to all people who seek peace and brotherhood, and to the people of New Zealand.”
At least one gunman mowed down Muslim worshippers during prayers at the Al Noor and Linwood mosques in New Zealand’s Christchurch city on Friday, while one of the shooters streamed the incident on social media.
The terror attack left 49 people dead and more than 20 seriously injured. Four suspects – three men and one woman – have been detained so far.
