The ruling AK Party announces that it objects to the local election results in all districts of Istanbul on Tuesday before the deadline expires at 15:00 local time, according to the latest reports.
The chair of the Supreme Electoral Council (YSK), Sadi Guven said that election certificates are to be issued in the districts where no objection was lodged.
The main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) and the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) are engaged in a dispute over Sunday’s election results in the race for the mayorship of Istanbul.
Electoral observers were expecting Istanbul’s mayoral election to be tough and that came true.
CHP’s candidate Ekrem Imamoglu has taken the lead against AKP’s Binali Yildirim, according to the preliminary results of YSK.
Imamoglu has 4,157,505 votes which translate to 48.8 percent while Yildirim has 4,130,190 votes, representing 48.48 percent.
AKP’s Yildirim declared his victory at 23.25 pm based on the early findings of AKP’s electoral officials. He then acknowledged having 25,000 votes less than his rival Imamoglu.
Similarly, the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, AKP leader, seemed to admit the result in Istanbul.
“Every gain and every loss is the will of our people and also a requirement of democracy that should be acknowledged,” Erdogan said on Sunday night.
However, later on, Monday, AKP challenged the result.
Bayram Senocak, AKP’s Istanbul Provincial Officer, argued in a press release that there were lots of irregularities pertaining the vote counts which could change the result of the election in Istanbul. He claimed AKP had experiences of 15 different previous elections. Every time so far, the results of YSK and of their own had overlapped, however, they have been facing a significant difference for the first time. Senocak drew attention to canceled 309,000 votes in Istanbul.
In response to the AKP’s challenge, CHP’s Imamoglu called for YSK to finish recounting the votes as soon as possible. Imamoglu said he was looking forward to serving as Istanbul mayor.
Imamoglu told Gazete Duvar that he had received calls from people, praising his peacemaking stance during the election night and the aftermath.
“We have realized that the community has got relaxed with our attitude. People have been calling me and stating this fact in tears. That is so interesting. That means individuals miss a conciliatory discourse and a unifying behavior,” he said.
He added in that regard he was waiting for a congratulation call from Erdogan for his victory.
Imamoglu has received a congratulatory message from Nihal Olcok, wife of Erol Olcok, who was a close friend to Erdogan, killed with his son on the night of July 15 during a coup attempt in 2016.
“Dear Imamoglu, our new Istanbul metropolitan mayor, let us hope for the best of everybody and everything. Congratulations! I want you to know that I will be praying for you, I hope you will not be flying high [due to your victory in elections],” She said in a tweet.
