European rights court orders Turkey to compensate citizen held in police custody when he was 8

The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has ordered Turkey to pay compensation to a Turkish citizen who was taken into police custody when he was 8 years old for violating his right to freedom and security, Turkish media reported on Tuesday.

Birtan Sinan Depe was at a neighbor’s apartment when police raided it in 2001.

He was kept at the police station for two days without the issuance of any legal document, and he was found when the police also detained his mother in the same investigation on charges of theft.

His mother, Yasemin Depe, filed a criminal complaint for police malpractice in 2004, but after five years, the local court ruled to drop the case due to the statute of limitations.

After the Supreme Court of Appeals also ruled in favor of the police officers, Depe’s lawyer applied to the European rights court for compensation. (turkishminute.com)
