German journalist returns to İstanbul after Turkey steps back

The Turkish government has renewed the press credentials of Tagesspiegel reporter Thomas Seibert after initially refusing to do so, Deutsche Welle Turkish service reported on Monday.

The German journalist, who was forced to leave Turkey, returned to İstanbul after the decision.

“I’m glad the entire misunderstanding has been cleared up,” Seibert said.

Seibert has been accredited as a correspondent in Turkey since 1997.

He, along with ZDF television İstanbul bureau chief Jörg Brase, had to leave Turkey in March after the Turkish government refused to renew their press credentials for unknown reasons.

They were told to depart Turkey within 10 days, and they held a press conference in İstanbul where they accused Ankara of trying to “silence” the international media.

The move sparked reactions from Berlin, which condemned it as “unacceptable.”

Previously, in a story he published in Tagesspiegel, Seibert had claimed that Ankara urged the newspaper to “send another journalist instead of Seibert.” (turkishminute.com)
