Ruling AKP appeals local election results in Ankara again, this time before provincial electoral board

Secretary-General of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), Fatih Sahin, told
reporters on Thursday that the results of the vote recount – after their objection to the
initial vote count results in every district of Ankara – had not met their expectations and they would, therefore, appeal again on Friday, this time before the provincial election board.

During a press release at AKP’s Ankara Provincial Office, Sahin said, following Sunday’s tight
election results in Ankara, that AKP demanded a recount of the Ankara metropolitan mayorship before all 25 district election boards. However, only 12 district boards ruled in favor and recounted previously annulled votes, with 1,805 extra votes being allocated to AKP’s candidate, Mehmet Ozhaseki, and 666 for Mansur Yavas, candidate for the opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP).

Sahin argued that 1,139 extra votes in favor “did not meet their expectations”, and that they
will, therefore, appeal the election results before the provincial board to make the district
boards in every district of the capital recount invalid votes, and correct voting irregularities.

The secretary-general vowed that they will be in pursuit of the results and will further, apply to the Supreme Electoral Council (YSK) if the provincial board rejects their appeal.

On Friday, Hakan Han Ozcan, AKP Ankara Provincial Officer, announced that they had submitted their objection to the provincial board, demanding the recount of all ballot boxes, totaling 12,180 in Ankara.

On the CHP side, Rifki Guvener, CHP Ankara Provincial Officer, declared Yavas’ victory
after the decisions of the district boards on Friday, stating that Yavas had won by 124,489 votes over the AKP candidate.

Commenting on the recount of votes in Ankara, Guvener said they have found Thursday’s
declaration of AKP’s secretary general disrespectful to the national will. “The secretary of the ruling party did not like the result of the appeal. He says that they will appeal again since the
initial results did not meet their expectations. These are desperate words,” Guvener said.

On Monday, before AKP’s first appeal at district boards, the AKP secretary general stated that they would make “significant progress” as a result of their appeals, and the recount would show that the AKP candidate won.

Similarly, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan declared on Monday that he was looking for shifting the outcome of local elections in Ankara in AKP’s favor by appealing.

Ankara was considered one of the main battlegrounds of the March 31 elections, as it has been uninterruptedly ruled by the governing AKP for 25 years.

The state-run news agency, Anadolu, says CHP’s Yavas received 50.93 percent of the votes in
Sunday’s local elections, while AKP’s Ozhaseki got 47.12 percent.
