A presidential decree issued on Sunday extended the suspension of tariffs on onion imports one more month, until the end of April, as onion prices have again started to rise due to a shortage in stocks, the Diken news website reported.
In November Turkish police raided dozens of warehouses on suspicion of stockpiling produce such as potatoes and onions as part an “all-out war” on high inflation.
The raids came after remarks by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan targeting wholesalers who were hoarding basic goods amid a currency crisis the country experienced last year.
Onions have recently been sold at municipality-subsidized stalls in order to lower the prices.
However, as producers have complained about disease in this year’s harvest, the stocks have been exhausted and prices began to increase, according to the report.
