Turkey rose two spots in the FIFA World football rankings after recent victories over Moldova and Albania. Turkey achieved the success under new coach Senol Gunes in the Euro 2020 qualifiers, garnering 1457 points which took them to 39th spot.
The Turkish national team beat Albania 2-0 away from home on March 22 in the qualifiers for UEFA EURO 2020.
Beşiktaş coach Şenol Güneş who previously brought Turkey to third place in the 2002 FIFA World Cup during his only time at the head of the team, led Turkey against Albania.
Earlier in March the Turkish national team and head coach Mircea Lucescu mutually terminated their contract. Turkey failed to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup during Lucescu’s tenure. Gunes officially became the team’s manager for a four-year term starting on June 1.
Turkey beat Moldova 4-0 at home in the second game of its Euro 2020 qualification campaign on March 25.
Belgium secured the top spot in the world ranking. World Cup winners France sit on second spot and Brazil stays in third.
England defeated Czech Republic and Montenegro last month and moved up one place. England kicked off their European Qualifiers with a 5-0 thrashing of the Czech Republic at Wembley before coming from behind to win 5-1 in Podgorica last month.
Germany, who suffered a first-round exit in the 2018 World Cup, rose three places to 13th.
The European Qualifiers for UEFA EURO 2020 kicked off on March 21. The EURO 2020 qualifiers will choose 20 teams while four other teams will qualify from the UEFA Nations League playoffs in March 2020.
Turkey is in Group H with France, Iceland, Albania, Moldova and Andorra. Turkey ranks 39th in Group H above Albania in 62nd. Andorra and Moldova list 134th and 171th respectively.
