Turkey’s Supreme Electoral Council (YSK) rejected the ruling AK Party’s total vote recount demand for the ballots cast in Istanbul’s 31 districts on Tuesday, ruling a recount for 51 ballot boxes in 21 of the districts instead.
AKP’s YSK representative spoke to the press after a seven-hour-long meeting of the council, saying the council rejected their demand of a total recount for 31 out of 39 districts, referring to the legal precedents set by itself.
“The council decided a recount for 51 ballot boxes we chose by random sampling out of 31 000 in 21 districts,” said the AKP representative.
The Republican People’s Party (CHP) Istanbul branch’s twitter account posted a tweet following the decision:
“YSK rejected the demand for a total vote recount. This ruling confirms our victory in Istanbul once again. We invite everybody for our watch to protect our will in district electoral boards until we get our election certificate.”
The AKP’s deputy chairman Ali Ihsan Yavuz criticized the ruling on his twitter account, saying that his party will resort to an extraordinary objection process.
The same morning saw reports of a police operation coming from Buyukcekmece district of Istanbul, where AKP alleged an act of organized location shifting and vote rigging in the March 31 election.
Istanbul Police Department reportedly dispatched officers to the district on Tuesday morning to check registered voter addresses in a bid to investigate AKP’s claims.
“No one has the right to deploy Turkish Police in a bid to terrorize and threaten citizens,” said CHP spokesman Faik Oztrak, reacting to the conduct.
