Turkey’s Treasury and Finance Minister Berat Albayrak held talks with the US President Donald Trump in Washington, Albayrak announced from his Twitter account on Tuesday.
Albayrak said that Trump took a “reasonable” stance regarding Turkey’s plans to purchase Russian air defense systems, an issue that caused friction between Ankara and its NATO allies.
Washington time and again threatened Turkey with sanctions in the case of a purchase, and previously the Senate passed a resolution to halt the delivery of the F-35 fighter jets unless Turkey cancels the deal with Russia.
Albayrak also said that the two had discussed increasing bilateral trade between the US and Turkey.
Following his disclosure of an economic reform package in which the government guaranteed to boost the capital level of lenders and relieve bad debts, Albayrak went to Washington on Thursday to meet with investors and attend IMF and World Bank meetings.
His meeting with 400 investors on Thursday, an event hosted by JPMorgan, reportedly left the latter unconvinced according to the anonymous sources of the Reuters who attended the meeting.
Turkish authorities launched probes into the US investment bank JPMorgan weeks ago, accusing it of giving “manipulative” advice to clients on the Turkish currency.
Albayrak, who is also Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan’s son-in-law, met White House adviser Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law. The topics discussed by the two remain unclear.
Albayrak also said he had met with US Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin and he defined the meetings he had in Washington “fruitful.”
