Republican People’s Party (CHP) member Turan Hancerli has become the first-ever person with a disability (PWD) to get elected for mayor in Turkey according to unofficial results. He won the vote as the mayor of Istanbul’s Avcilar district according to unofficial results of Sunday’s poll.
Hancerli spoke to the Gazete Duvar reporter Haci Biskin, saying that his success is the result of a collective endeavor.
Hancerli obtained 52,13 percent of the votes in the Avcilar district.
He stated that his first action in office will be to get rid of the luxury staff cars and work on delivering payments of employees.
Hancerli (44) lost his upper limbs in an accident while working on a farm when he was 18. He graduated from Istanbul University Law Department in 1999 and worked as a lawyer since then.
When asked about his first reaction to his win, Hancerli said that he hugged his two daughters and colleagues immediately.
“I am not a person who can be happy when somebody else is saddened. I warned my friends about this as well,” said Avcilar mayor.
