Gov’t-critical journalist Selim Demirağ assaulted in front of his house in Ankara

Turkish journalist and TV host Yavuz Selim Demirağ was attacked on Friday night by a group of individuals with sticks, the Diken newspaper reported.

The columnist, who writes for the government-critical and ultranationalist Yeniçağ daily, was hospitalized for possible traumatic injury but is reportedly in good condition.

The incident was announced on Twitter by Demirağ’s co-host on Türkiyem TV, Murat Ağırel.

Ağırel said the attack took place after he dropped Demirağ off at his house following a broadcast, according to a phone call from his daughter.

The Ankara police have so far detained six people based on security camera footage and eyewitness statements.

The assault was condemned by the newspaper management and opposition party leader Meral Akşener, who characterized it as an attack on press freedom.

“Don’t worry, we’ll keep writing and expose them for the immoral robbers and looters that they are,” said Ağırel. “Journalism is not a crime, and we’re not afraid of you.”

Erol Önderoğlu from Reporters Without Borders (RSF) said, “We’ll keep track of the way those who systematically imprison journalists will treat the group of aggressors who left Demirağ drenched in blood.”
