Guards injured as militants try to enter Turkish parliament

Turkish police have detained two suspected members of a far-leftist outlawed organization who tried to enter the country’s parliament with a hoax explosive device and  sharp objects, broadcaster NTV reported late on Tuesday.

According to Turkish authorities, security personnel of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) in Ankara prevented an attempted attack by the Revolutionary People’s Liberation Party/Front (DHKP-C).

Also known as a Turkish Marxist-Leninist Party, DHKP-C is a far-leftist armed militant group deemed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, US and the European Union.

NTV said that a man and a woman with suspected links to the DHKP-C were stopped by the security officials as they attempted to enter the parliament’s visitors’ lobby.

The security personnel discovered the pair’s links to the outlawed organization after examining their identities and a clash broke out between the two groups when the guards tried to search the suspects.

During the brawl, two security officials were reportedly injured by a sharp object.

After the suspects were subdued, the guards found a black box designed to look like a bomb set-up and a knife fixed to the top of a pencil, according to the report.

Both suspects, Mulla Zincir and Eylem Yucel, reportedly have criminal records that include terrorism charges.

Fahrettin Altun, the presidential communications director said in a tweet that the two suspected DHKP-C militants “will pay a price for their terrorist acts against the will and the peace of the nation.”

The DHKP-C has been responsible for a string of attacks and assassinations in Turkey since the 1980s, including the killing of Turkish prosecutor Mehmet Selim Kiraz.

On March 31, 2015, Kiraz was killed by two DHKP-C terrorists who entered Istanbul’s Caglayan Courthouse posing as lawyers and took him hostage in his office.

Kiraz was shot in the head by his captors after hours of negotiations between Turkish police officers and the two DHKP-C militants.
