New opposition leader with Islamist roots takes a swipe at Erdogan

Fatih Erbakan, leader of newly founded New Welfare Party (YRP) and son of former Turkish
Prime Minister Necmettin Erbakan, has been criticizing the ruling Justice and Development
Party (AKP), Diken online news outlet reported on Monday.

Speaking to his party members in the southern province of Kahramanmaras on Sunday,
Erbakan came out, guns blazing, as he claimed that the state had failed to fulfill its many
essential duties.

Erbakan criticized the policies adopted by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his
Justice and Development Party (AKP), notably on two subjects – justice and economy.

“The justice mechanism [in Turkey] is in the throes of death. There is no justice, not only in
the justice mechanism, but also in the state, in municipalities, and in bureaucracy,” Erbakan
claimed.

Erbakan went on to say that, nowadays, Turkey has entered into a new period in which
lawyers with good knowledge are not favorites, but lawyers with good relations are
favorites, referring to some law offices established for finalizing cases using political
relations.

According to Erbakan, there are many law firms that gain millions of liras.
“Favoritism is at its highest level. Merit is not a coin of the realm anymore in Turkey,” said
Erbakan.

Erbakan claimed that the country has been experiencing the most debtor period since the
beginning of the Turkish Republic, having 1 trillion $ debt. According to Erbakan, every year
they have to pay 100 billion dollars in interest.

“How will ‘Great Turkey’ be possible again like that?” Erbakan asked.

NWP is the last baby of “National Vision”

Necmettin Erbakan, Erbakan’s father who passed away in 2011, is known as the first political leader of modern-day Turkish Islamists. He created the “National Vision” ideology which backs the ideas that Turkey would be able to develop on the basis of its own national values and economic potential.

Founders of AKP – Erdogan, former President Abdullah Gul, and Bulent Arinc – were once
the followers of the National Vision ideology.

The National Vision movement founded several parties – National Order Party (MNP),
National Salvation Party (MSP), Welfare Party (RP), Virtue Party (FP), and Felicity Party (SP).

Felicity Party is still active in politics as a successor of the ideology.

Following disputes with the SP administration, Fatih Erbakan, the 40-year-old son of RP founder Necmettin Erbakan, relaunched the party last month under the name of New Welfare Party (YRP).
