Turkish police have seized the passport of Suat Corlu, the husband of journalist and translator Mesale Tolu, who on Wednesday traveled from Germany to Turkey in order to attend a trial on Thursday.
The passport of Corlu, who is also a journalist and a political activist, was seized on orders from the Ankara Provincial Security Directorate upon his arrival at Istanbul’s Sabiha Gokcen Airport, his wife said on Twitter.
Tolu’s husband was to attend the ninth hearing of a trial where the couple, as well as 25 other defendants, face charges that include “membership in a terrorist organization” and “terrorist propaganda.”
The hearing, which was held at the 29th High Criminal Court of Istanbul on Thursday, was adjourned until October 11 after the court ruled to keep the judicial control measures in place for 22 defendants, including the couple.
“Suat flew from Germany to Istanbul in the evening to follow our hearing tomorrow. Is it a crime to attend, follow our hearings?” Tolu stated in a tweet on Wednesday.
Can Dundar, a critical journalist in exile, also commented on the issue on Twitter and said: “This regime punishes both those who want to get in [the country] and those who want to get out [of it].”
After her detention over terror charges in April 2017, Tolu spent nearly eight months in Bakırkoy Women’s Closed Penitentiary together with her two-year-old son.
Facing up to 15 years in jail, the German journalist was released on December 18, 2017, under judicial supervision and a travel ban was imposed on her.
Her husband, who was initially detained along with Tolu, was released one month earlier, also under judicial control.
An Istanbul court decided at a hearing on April 2018 to merge her case file with that of another one where Corlu was charged. The same court also lifted Tolu’s travel ban.
Her husband’s travel ban was lifted later at a hearing in October 2018.
Both of the journalists stand accused of being members of the extreme-left Marxist-Leninist Communist Party (MLKP), which has been designated a terror organization by the Turkish government.
Tolu is a German national of Turkish descent who was born in the city of Ulm.
