The Ankara Prosecutor’s Office has asked the Turkish parliament to lift the immunity from prosecution for 25 lawmakers from the opposition parties including three party leaders, Turkish media outlets reported on Monday.
A total of 44 summaries of proceedings from the Ministry of Justice were filed against 25 Members of Parliament (MP). Among them are Kemal Kilicdaroglu, leader of the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), Pervin Buldan and Sezai Temelli who are co-leaders of the pro-Kurdish People’s Democratic Party (HDP).
Together with the latest ones, the number of immunity lifting files waiting for the parliamentary decision has increased to 608.
In the history of the Turkish Grand National Assembly, there have been 40 MPs whose legislative immunity has been suspended and were subsequently prosecuted.
In 2016, the assembly voted on a bill to remove the immunity of 112 MPs out of 500 dossiers. Later, HDP’s former co-leader Selahattin Demirtas was jailed since he was stripped of his immunity from prosecution.
