A Belarusian diplomat was assaulted with a gun and received injuries in Ankara, Turkey’s capital Ankara late on Wednesday, Reuters reported quoting Ankara Governor, Vasip Sahin.
According to the report, Alexander Poganshev was shot several times by his neighbor, a retired soldier, while he was taking a walk with his son in Ankara’s Or-An district.
The shooter committed suicide soon after taking five or six shots at the diplomat, Sahin was quoted.
Stating that the incident was due to a personal dispute and there is no political aspect to the assault, the governor said there were no further details available at the moment.
“The incident will be investigated by prosecutors,” he added. The spokesman for the Belarusian foreign ministry, Anatoly Glaz, also released a statement, saying the attacker was mentally unstable. “An advisor to the Belarus embassy was attacked on his way back home with his child. He was fired at several times,” Glaz said, adding the diplomat was in a critical condition.
Turkey’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mevlut Cavusoglu, also visited Poganshev in hospital late on Wednesday and spoke to the press after his visit.
“He is doing well after the surgery and currently at the intensive care unit. He is expected to leave the unit and sent to his room at the hospital as of tomorrow. Every operation has its risks but our doctors say he is doing well right now. Hopefully, he fully recovers even sooner,” Cavusoglu informed.
He emphasized Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was closely following developments around the issue.
