Three Turkish soldiers were killed and one soldier was wounded during an operation against the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in Turkey’s eastern Hakkari province, the Turkish interior ministry announced on Sunday.
Three PKK militants were also killed in the joint counter-terrorism operation by forces of the Turkish Gendarmerie and the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) in a rural area of Hakkari, according to the ministry’s written statement.
The ministry expressed condolences for the Turkish soldiers – Gendarmerie lieutenant Alim Keskin, non-commissioned officer Cengiz Toker, and specialized sergeant Suleyman Yasir Agir – to their families.
In the statement, the ministry vowed that “operations against terrorist organizations will continue with determination.”
PKK, designated a terrorist group by Ankara, has been fighting for Kurdish self-rule against the Turkish state in predominantly Kurdish areas of southeastern Turkey since the early 1980s.
