An Ankara high criminal court on Wednesday handed down a sentence of eight years, one month and 15 days to İdris Karagöz, who previously served as secretary of the private cabinet of National Intelligence Organization (MİT) Director Hakan Fidan, the Cumhuriyet newspaper reported.
Karagöz received the sentence over alleged links to the Gülen movement, which the Turkish government accuses of orchestrating a 2016 coup attempt and considers a terrorist group. The movement strenuously denies all accusations.
Karagöz was acquitted of other charges of undermining the constitutional order and espionage.
He was reportedly recruited at MİT in December 2010 after an interview that Fidan conducted himself.
He was dismissed two days after the failed coup in July 2016 and arrested a month later.
