Mehmet Emin Bilmez, who was recently appointed by Turkey’s Interior Ministry as a trustee in place of the mayor of Van, has announced that a ban has been imposed on all protest activities in the city for the next fiveteen days.
A statement released on Tuesday said all types of protest activities including marches, the issuing of press statements, demonstrations, the erecting of tents and stands, the holding of sit-ins and the carrying of banners and placards have been prohibited for a period of 15 days beginning from August 27.
In a controversial move on Monday, the Turkish Interior Ministry removed three elected mayors in Van, Mardin and Diyarbakır from the Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) claiming that they have links to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).
