Ekrem Imamoglu, Istanbul’s new mayor from the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) has announced that main metro and bus lines in the city will begin running 24-hour services as of August 30, T24 news portal reported on Wednesday.
One of Imamoglu’s electoral campaign promises was the 24-hour transportation in Istanbul before his narrow victory in the March 31 local election.
Imamoglu won the mayoral seat with a landslide victory in the June 23 re-run, which came after the ruling AK Party (AKP) appealed against the March results claiming voting irregularities.
“Our stance is clear. We are going to provide 24-hour transport. Night workers and young people want it,” he said on March 21.
“The people of Istanbul have long demanded 24-hour public transport. Twenty-four-hour services will begin on the most important metro and bus routes in the city on the August 30 Victory Day,” the mayor on Wednesday said in a tweet.
